Q&A regarding speaking in tongues

God’s plan is manifold: it has many facets to it. We are encouraged to explore and experience all that He has promised for us. The promise of the Holy Spirit baptism is for all believers. Hopefully the questions and answers below will help you enjoy more of what God has for you\ in this important manifestation of His love for His children.

Matthew 3:11 (Promise)

I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

Acts 2:1-4  (Fulfilment)

When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

 Q. Do I have the Holy Spirit if I don’t speak in tongues?

 A. Yes you do. Any born again believer has the Holy Spirit, but not the full degree to which God intends. Like a multi- storied building, there are ‘levels’ to the Holy Spirit’s ministry.

Q. Why is it important to speak in tongues?

A.  Because of the several benefits God has intended to help you be an effective witness.

Q. Why is it that some Christians I know who speak in tongues, don’t actually live such a Godly life?

A. Because like anyone else, they have to grow in the fruit. You receive gifts and cooperate with God’s dealings to develop fruit by abiding ‘in the vine’. Everyone has to trust God to help them eradicate any inconsistencies in their lifestyle.

Q. Does speaking in tongues make you more spiritual?

A. No. Being like Christ makes you more spiritual or mature. It is also not profitable to compare oneself with other believers.

Q. Is there a chance that a ‘devil might come in ‘if I ask for the Holy Spirit?

A. No. When you ask God for the Holy Spirit, that’s what you get as a child of God.

Q. Doesn’t the Bible say that tongues will cease and that love is a better way?

A. Tongues will only cease when that which is perfect has come, that is, when all things conclude with the return of the Lord. Love must be at the center of all ministry including tongues and the interpretation of tongues. Any operation of the gifts should edify, exhort or comfort the hearer or recipient.
